What's Your Green Dream?
Green Schools Initiative (GSI) - one of our Environment Circle grantees - is making great strides in its program to expand outreach and inspire parents to become green champions at their children's schools. The nonprofit was founded in 2004 by parent-environmentalists who were shocked by how un-environmental their kids' schools were. Since then, GSI has mobilized thousands of teachers, students, and parents to improve the environmental health and ecological sustainability of schools in the U.S.
January 2011 marks a major milestone in the GSI/Full Circle Fund partnership: the launch of the online Green Schools Parent Toolkit and the "What's Your Green Dream School?" contest. Starting with an engaging 3-minute video, the toolkit has six quick and easy steps designed to help busy parents become advocates for reducing the environmental footprint of their child's school...

Education Circle Grantee Honored With Jefferson Award
Bidyut (BK) Bose has been honored with a Jefferson Award for his visionary leadership as executive director of the Niroga Institute, a two-year Full Circle Fund grantee. The Jefferson Awards for Public Service were co-founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and others to honor volunteerism and community outreach throughout the United States. BK's important work at Niroga has brought to light the critical need to put students first, and teach them transformational skills that enable them to be more receptive to learning.
BK left a successful career as a technology executive in Silicon Valley to launch the Niroga Institute in 2005. His goal was to create a vehicle to bring Transformative Life Skills (TLS) - including mindful movement, breathing and meditation techniques - to at-risk youth and other vulnerable populations who would not otherwise have access to these practices...

Expert Roster of Speakers Promotes Ideas, Dialogue, and Action
To help our member community enhance their skills as leaders and philanthropists, Full Circle Fund focuses on bringing role models to the table for programs that promote learning, dialogue, and action. The latter part of 2010 offered a powerhouse of expertise from mentors such as Ted Mitchell, CEO of NewSchools Venture Fund and John Morgridge, Chairman Emeritus of Cisco. These and other visionaries generously shared best practices and wisdom around grant making, social innovation, project management, impact measurement, and leadership. Their recommendations will inform future work in our focus areas of education, environment, and global economic opportunity...

La Cocina Project Connects Food Entrepreneurs to Growth Capital
Our Global Economic Opportunity Circle just wrapped up a year of engagement with La Cocina, an innovative nonprofit incubator for food entrepreneurs like Elvia Buendia of La Luna Cupcakes (her daughter Arai Zuemy Buendia is pictured at right).
La Cocina requested Full Circle Fund's strategic help to increase the number of businesses that graduate within an identified time frame, raise the number of new participants accepted into the program, and help participants access growth capital. These enhancements will allow the nonprofit to become a model incubator kitchen, laying the groundwork for scaling the organization locally and replicating in other geographic areas...

Heart of Silicon Valley
Three hundred of Silicon Valley's movers and shakers recently convened for a private concert at the elegant Portola Valley estate of venture capitalist Laird Cagan and his wife Sherry to hear The English Beat. This philanthropic couple opened their home and hearts for a memorable benefit that netted over $43,000 for Full Circle Fund.
This evening of fun and philanthropy was made possible by the Peninsula-based nonprofit, Heart of Silicon Valley (HOSV). HOSV is a volunteer-run nonprofit, co-founded by Full Circle Fund Member Jeff Pollock, that has produced 20 benefit concerts to date, bringing together hundreds of volunteers, musicians, local businesses, professionals, and philanthropists to support charitable organizations that are making a difference...
