Spot.us Receives Unprecedented Major Financial Gift

Posted by Kari Nathon Jung on February 19th, 2009

Spot.us LogoLocal newspapers and journalists all over the country are under great pressure to stay viable. Launched in November 2008, Spot.us is an innovative platform that fundraises for independent journalists and is one of Full Circle Fund’s Technology Circle grantees.

In mid-February, a reporter from a major national newspaper found out about the site, and after learning more about the model, chose to support Spot.us’s innovative approach to funding civic journalism by making a generous $50,000 grant from a donor advised trust.

“This grant gives us the opportunity to grow our platform along with our growing community,” David shared, “This way, we can see if our innovative approach to funding journalism can evolve from crawling to standing upright and walking tall.”

Spot.us is reaching a critical stage in its development, which is a major reason Full Circle Fund got involved. There is a great deal of interest among the Spot.us community in seeing new site features along with the ability to take the concept beyond the Bay Area. This generous gift will help build out the platform so that new site features can be developed, eventually enabling the project to scale up.
