On September 29th, Full Circle Fund hosted a double header to spread the word about Education Circle grant partner, EdSource, and their new report “Local Revenues for Schools: Limits and Options in California”. The report clarifies the complex layering of policy, lawsuits and stakeholders that determine how California public K-12 schools are funded and emphasizes that the current education budget crisis can not be solved without looking upstream to greater budgeting problems within California.

Partnering with Northern California Grantmakers (NCG), Full Circle Fund helped bring together a room of California funders interested in learning how California’s school finance system works and why the current fiscal climate could impact grantmaking strategies. Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, Silver Giving Foundation and Walter & Elise Haas Fund generously partnered with Full Circle Fund to sponsor the event.
Later in the day, Mary Perry, co-author of the report and panelist from the morning meeting, addressed the Education Circle about the challenges and opportunities around school finance reform. Check out her presentation in the video below…

This topic is particularly timely as Circle members within the Systemic Change Project Team work together to develop an Education policy platform that includes an equitable local funding strategy. Thank you to member Natasha Hoehn for leading both the Systemic Change Project Team and the EdSource project.
