In December, the Education Circle hosted a special salon featuring Arne Duncan’s replacement to Chicago Public Schools (CPS), Ron Huberman. The CEO of the third largest school district in the country addressed members and special guests highlighting the approaches he and his predecessor have employed to bring reform to the once ailing school district. These initiatives included drastic changes in performance management and focus on human capital.
Much in line with Full Circle Fund’s new education policy platform, Huberman spoke about the school district’s focus on each school by giving the a letter grade and leveraging adaptive testing to better track student performance. He also spoke about how the district is now in the business of “bringing in smart people” and that principles should be leaders and agents of change. This is reflective of Huberman’s own background - he never worked in education prior to his role as the CEO, but rather held various public service positions from the police department to the department of transportation in Chicago.
