A highlight of news articles, reports, videos and websites on philanthropy, grantmaking, and beyond that have caught the eye of Full Circle Fund’s staff and members this week. If these resources inspire you to get involved, check out our Community Calendar for upcoming events.
Member Kami Griffiths, and grantees Hamilton Family Center, CTN and past grantee Tech Connect are all featured in a really interesting article in PC World about San Francisco’s new Pathways to Technology programs, which connect families to technology and online resources. The article also mentions Full Circle Fund, a CTN funder. We’ll have a special post with more information, photos and results from the Pathways to Technology programs next week here on the News page!
Member Darian Rodriguez Heyman, Executive Director of the Craigslist Foundation was quoted in a New York Times article on transitioning to a career in the nonprofit sector. The article includes helpful tips and resources on looking for work in a public sector.
Finally, member Daniel Homsey points out an article about a possible biological reason for giving, called “The Philanthropy Hormone” in the April 2008 issue of Discover Magazine (the article is not yet available online). The article discusses a study that examined the role of oxytocin - a hormone that binds to brain regions associated with emotions, helps increase trust, and promotes the ability to empathize with others - in regulating generosity. During the study, people that had been given oxytocin increased their level of giving when someone else’s feelings could be affected, demonstrating a connection between empathy and generosity.
