Macro trends blogger Tim Bauer happened upon our video of the talk that angel investor Ron Conway gave to our members back in March about “Infinite Need, Infinite Opportunity.” Tim did a Tim did a nice writeup about it on his site, writing:

“Who doesn’t like [the] song from Barenaked Ladies, “If I Had a Million Dollars.” Well for Ron Conway its “I Have More Than A Million”. And this webcast by him caught my eye initially as I was curious on his take on startup funding process (he has participated in some of the larger startup financing plays in the valley). But, as life goes, the talk was to other people with millions and how to give away all that ’spare change’ (philanthropy). He also commented that his process of philanthropy was the same as his investment selection models.”

The trigger moment for philanthropy, Ron Conway speaks at Full Circle Fund’s event

Posted by Lauren on March 26th, 2008

Ron Conway photoTonight over 120 business and community leaders are gathered at the offices of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati to hear from Ron Conway, preeminent angel investor, philanthropist and entrepreneurial thought leader.

Ron, best known for his foresight on innovation in the private sector, is instead diving into to Full Circle Fund’s members and guests about “Innovative Need, Infinite Opportunity” - how the infinite need for solutions to pressing social issues opens a world of infinite opportunity for engaged philanthropists to bring their talents and resources to bear on the issues.

Ron shared this sage wisdom with Full Circle Fund’s members and invited guests:

“I’ve been very lucky and privileged to invest in some of the greatest companies in Silicon Valley…before I give somebody money, I want to be an investor with entrepreneurs I have a good chemistry with, it had better be a great idea, and it had better be monetizable. When you’re picking a charity, you should do the same thing”

  • If it’s not fun and enjoyable, you shouldn’t do it.
  • Make sure the charity you like is working, that it’s effective.
  • In charity it’s not monetizabe per se, it’s if the charity’s services are something you can get passionate about helping.

“The skills you are using to pick charities are the same as I use for angel investing.”
