Pivot Learning Partners

Background

Full Circle Fund was an early sponsor of dialogue in California regarding the strategic use of differentiated teacher compensation. (See pages on the Alt Comp Dialogue.) In 2011, Full Circle's Education Circle decided to invest in a different but related question: how should teachers be evaluated?

The timing for this question was good. The Federal Race to the Top program had spurred interest in the question of teacher evaluation, and Pivot Learning Partners was just the right partner to take the conversation to a more actionable, local level.

Mission

Pivot Learning Partners seeks to transform schools into vital places to learn and to teach. Pivot works with education leaders in both schools and districts to develop, assess and use the knowledge needed for schools to engage in a systematic and sustainable improvement process.

Full Circle Fund Role

Pivot Learning Partners, in partnership with Full Circle Fund and the North Bay Teacher Evaluation Collaborative, resolved to bring 12 districts together to study and revise teacher evaluation systems. This professional learning community committed to share best practices to provide a larger context in a series of six to eight meetings facilitated by Full Circle Fund to bring new information to negotiation teams, and improve evaluation systems.

Team members also planned to develop a set of tools and materials based on these meetings and other research to help pave the way for cross-district collaborative approach to redesigning major district systems.

"I first became involved in Full Circle Fund as a Community Fellow. I have found the mix of for-profit and non-profit members refreshing and inspiring. As a grant recipient we have valued Full Circle members for their ability to think outside the boundaries of the education world."
