At our 2013 Annual Retreat, our Members, Alumni, guest speakers and staff gathered together for a beautiful day-and-a-half at Point Reyes Marconi Center. Our keynotes Alex Bernadotte of Beyond 12, Lisa Solomon of Innovation Studio, and Dr. Sandra Hernandez of The San Francisco Foundation rounded out a great program that inspired our Members and encouraged everyone to think "outside the circle."
What all took place outside our conference, walls, however, ended up becoming easily the highlight of the weekend. Full Circle Fund staff member, Marian Zizzo, led the youngest of the bunch -- the children of our Members -- to develop their own Giving Circle and decide how they would spend $150 given to them.
They started off the process by introducing themselves and describing what interested them. Using post-it notes, a retreat favorite, they jotted down as many interests as they could and found that they overlapped in education, art, gaming, and music. They then spent time identifying who their target audience might be, and researched which nonprofits would fit their desired cause and criteria.
The finalists included: Edutopia, Khan Academy, Inter-city Arts, and Hungry For Music -- all organizations that proved to our young leaders to be worthy of the grant money. The group finished their session by coming to a final vote, and preparing a presentation for the evening. At dinner, the group presented their strategy and outcome of their giving session brainstorm, and decided to award their $150 grant to Hungry For Music.
Let's hear it for our young leaders and future philanthropists!
