Carey Averbook

Carey Averbook is a program designer and communications strategist with experience working in transnational and multicultural contexts. Drawing on user research and systems thinking, Carey designs programs that meet the needs of those they are meant to serve and creates multimedia content that strengthens marketing and brands. She believes that we live our lives by stories and can change our lives by changing the stories we tell.

Carey received her M.A. in New Media Photojournalism from George Washington University’s Corcoran School of Arts and Design and a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She actively works to develop trauma-informed lenses of analysis that center intersectionality and systemic power dynamics. A fluent Spanish speaker, she collaborated with women-led communities on cultural resilience projects while living in Bolivia and with migrant communities in the Washington, D.C. area to produce the multimedia documentary "Solo el puente cuenta ya / Only the Bridge Matters Now." Over time, she has gained a wide range of non-profit experience in diverse roles including those of a North Carolina Literacy Corps Americorps member, a leadership and radio instructor for LGBTQ youth at Washington, D.C.'s Latin American Youth Center, a UX and Communications Strategist for Climate Interactive, and currently as a freelance communications strategist and video producer for non-profits and small businesses.
